ACAPULCO, Mexico -- A surfer was killed by a shark off Mexico's Pacific coast, a mere 6 miles (10 kilometers) from a beach where an American man died in a similar attack last month, authorities said.

Osvaldo Mata Valdovinos, 21, was attacked Friday while surfing off Pantla beach west of Acapulco, said local Civil Protection Director Jaime Vazquez Sobreira. The shark bit off his left hand and broke one of his legs, Vazquez Sobreira said.

Another young man, Jorge Duque Valle, said he witnessed the attack.

"He raised his hand and screamed, and that was when his hand and leg were bitten," Duque Valle said. "Osvaldo went under. He was under water for a while and then he emerged bleeding."

The attack came less than a month after 24-year-old Adrian Ruiz of San Francisco died after being bitten by a shark while surfing off Troncones beach. Mexican authorities used baited hooks to catch sharks in the area the next day.

Environmentalists opposed the hunt and have demanded that authorities post signs in the area's beaches warning about sharks.

Net the beaches used by people most! I realize nets can catch other fish and sea mammals, too, but can't the nets have brightly colored fabric attached to scare animals and fish away instead of catching them? We can save the environment and people, too...right? I can't imagine the terror this guy went through in order to just surf.

It's like what quint on the movie Jaws said. Your in the water, the sharks in the water, your'e in his domain. Only one thing will keep you from being his lunch, and thats if you stay in the hotel pool.

you are over 1 million times more likely to die in your car on the way to the beach, than being eaten by a shark.

Sharks kill people! Who cares if they intend it or not. Why don't these environmentalist and scientist go swimming more often with them.
