A fisherman died after a shark attacked him off the coastal town of Paoay in Ilocos Norte, Thursday afternoon.

Coastal villagers found the mutilated body of Joel Bacud, 38, of Barangay Callaguip, floating on the sea near his fishing boat.

Police said that according to witnesses Bacud jumped off his fishing boat, which was anchored a few meters away from the coastline of Barangay Callaguip.

Investigators said the shark could have smelled the blood of Bacud's catch while he was swimming back to his boat.

The shark attacked Bacud's torso and arm, instantly killing the fisherman, police said.
