Portuguese Fishing Boat Nets 23-foot Basking Shark

The crew of a Portugese fishing boat had their hands full Tuesday when they netted a 23-foot shark weighing 2.5 tons.

The four men were fishing at night in deep water about 20 miles off the Portugese coast when their nets snared the huge fish.

The boat towed the shark to its home port at Sesimbra, 30 miles south of Lisbon.

Local authorities provided winching equipment and transport to take the shark for burial at a municipal dump.
