Quote:
A MAN has been arrested by cops probing the use of live dogs as shark bait, it was revealed last night.

It comes a day after The Sun published horrific photos of a pup with a fishing hook through its snout.

Cops on French-controlled Reunion Island say a man will appear in court tomorrow. And last night the French Embassy vowed to target more rogue fishermen.

It said: “Such acts are illegal and intolerable.”

Animal welfare group Sea Shepherd will pay £680 to any cop who catches a fisherman baiting a dog.

Thousands contacted the RSPCA and The Sun after reading our story.

In one case, a six-month-old labrador puppy had its paws bound with wire and was used for bait.

That has got to be one of the most inhumane things I have ever heard of...I expect people to treat animals they have no personal relationship with badly to a certain degree...(I expect it, that doesn't mean I approve of it). But most people with half a heart would not be able to hear an animal cry like he must have and do that. Just proves that not everyone has evolved fully.

I know what I would like to do to that fisherman, and his hook! What low life trash does something like that to a dog? Is there any hope for humanity when garbage like this guy roams this earth? In Alaska a Fisherman like this freak would just accidently fall over the side one day...with a big shoe print on his back! How does that work in France? One can only hope...

They'll probably get a gigantic fine, something equivalent to about $60 US, or maybe they'll turn him over to peta and let them whine him to death.

While I'd like to give The Sun the benefit of the doubt, this story is clearly a hoax.

First, the name of this nefarious fisherman is never mentioned Rolling Eyes ; the author refers to the local Reunion Island police as "the cops" Rolling Eyes ; the hook shown is not a hook that would be used for large sharks, but instead appears to be a barbless tuna double hook (if it IS a fishing hook at all) Rolling Eyes ; and the dog shown in the plainly obvious photoshop-created picture is not in any distress. Rolling Eyes

If that weren't enough, a quick online check of Reunion Island's newspaper, Le Journal de I'lle, doesn't mention any such outrageous story, and (perhaps not surprising) a search of French Embassy press releases doesn't substantiate The Sun's claims either.

And for pete's-sake, a golden retriever? Sacre bleu!

Video (with French commentary) here:

http://www.30millionsdamis.fr/FR/Petition/img/chiens_reunion_grand_format.wmv

I'm still not sure that it's genuine.

The dog seems unconcerned, and undamaged (no swelling, blood, or tenderness), as though it's one of those 'nail through the heads' magicians tricks, and being barbless and stainles steel, why didn't they just slip the hooks out?

Here's some more info on the dog shark case....

There's also a recent story from Vanuatu about a dog being used as shark bait.

http://www.underwatertimes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1613

The pictures appear to be legit...

This comes from the guy who was one of the first (or the first) to call the assassin dolphin story a hoax.

Sadly, it seems this is indeed a case of ghastly animal cruelty. Thanks Jeff and Leon for providing some additional info on this curious and disturbing story.

If you read this snopes write-up, the story is classified as 'identifies statements of undetermined or ambiguous veracity'. If you read the write-up, they cast doubt on some of the claims made by those using the photos for propaganda purposes but never cast much doubt on the truth of the original story.

Snopes said the famous photo may show an accidently ensnared dog. I doubt that dog was accidently ensnared. Maybe snared for some purpose other than shark fishing, but I really doubt it was accidently ensared.

As for whether live dogs have been used for shark bait--it's true. Some folks in Vanuatu caught a tiger shark using dog as bait.
